The artwork was first used as a meme on Twitterin July 2022 and became increasingly popular over the course of the year. The image is similar to the Emo Wolfmeme by artist Wolf Road. It is unclear who created the wolf ripping shirt art. In late 2024, the image gained association with the song Animalsby Maroon 5, and has since been used in Marvel Rivalsmemesabout the character Wolverine.
